Many of you value the time Dr. Porter spends looking at the full picture of your health—your history, labs, symptoms, and goals. Yet under current Maryland law, there are moments when I can identify the problem and design the right plan, but I must send you to another provider to complete something as simple as a prescription. That means another appointment, another wait, and sometimes a delay in care.
Legislation currently being considered in Annapolis (HB0520 / SB0470) would allow licensed naturopathic doctors in Maryland to complete the care we are already trained to provide. Naturopathic doctors have prescriptive authority in 14 states and the District of Columbia. Maryland is one of the few places where patients must still be referred elsewhere to finish treatment that could have been handled in the same visit.
The hearings are going well and the bill is now in a critical stage. Naturopathic doctors across Maryland have donated significant time and resources to move this forward because it directly benefits patients. If you value having a doctor who can follow your care from diagnosis through treatment without unnecessary detours, your donation will mean a great deal. There is one group with deep pockets that is opposed to any changes in other practitioners abilities.
