Light is life. From the sun that fuels our circadian rhythm and nourishes our cells with vitamin D, to the focused beams of lasers in precision medicine, light plays an essential role in healing physically, emotionally, and energetically.
In modern medicine, we see light as a powerful tool: lasers used in surgery, red and near-infrared light therapy to reduce inflammation and speed up tissue repair, and UV light treating skin conditions like psoriasis. These therapies remind us that the body responds to light passively and actively. Our cells listen.
Light’s healing power does not stop at the physical level. In traditions like Reiki and energy medicine, light is also a symbol of the vital life force that flows through us. It is visualized, channeled, and felt as a gentle current restoring balance to the mind, body, and spirit.
As a naturopathic doctor, I often guide patients to recognize both the science of light and the spirit of light. We are not just physical beings—we are energetic systems. As Einstein discovered we are either energy OR matter times the speed of light squared (E=MC2). The average cell in your body emits 6-60,000 biophotons (light) per minute per cm2 and you have approximately 33 trillion cells in your body. When our energy is stuck, dimmed, or scattered, we do not thrive.
Light plays several vital and fascinating roles in the human body: affecting metabolism, hormones, cellular energy and communication, circadian rhythms, and even mood and immunity. While our bodies don't "see" light internally the way our eyes do, cells respond to different wavelengths, especially visible and near-infrared light.
So how can you begin to awaken your own inner light?
Soak in natural sunlight daily even 10 minutes in the morning helps reset your circadian rhythm and lifts your mood.
Use therapeutic light wisely. Red light panels, full-spectrum bulbs, or even candlelight can support deep rest and cellular vitality.
Visualize light during meditation or working with your Intelligent Body—imagine a warm golden light flowing through your body, clearing tension and recharging your system.
Practice energy-based healing like Reiki, breathwork, Qi Gong or chakra balancing to reconnect with your deeper self. Visualize light pouring into each chakra healing and cleansing.
Strengthen your light—set boundaries, nourish your spirit, and engage in what uplifts you.
Remember, light is not something you have to seek outside yourself. It already lives within you. Healing often begins when we remember our own radiance, reconnect with nature, and realign with the energy (vital force) of life itself, within and without.
Stay luminous,
Dr. Stephany Porter
