What Can You Do Today?

Health literacy and patient education are central components of the naturopathic doctor’s approach to patient-centered care. Many current public health practices and lifestyle recommendations are foundational principles of naturopathic medicine and inform our approach to support public health efforts through this current pandemic.

As a Naturopathic Doctor, prevention is instrumental to our practice. Following the guidelines listed and incorporating a combination of diet, lifestyle, herbs, nutrients, and/or homeopathics into your life could prove to decrease the burden on you and our health care system by decreasing the risk of escalation of symptoms once contracted.

There are 3 basic stages to the virus: 1) asymptomatic and a carrier 2) mild to severe symptoms and 3) hospitalization. Do everything you can to assure you are less likely to progress if contracted.

Diet – Food

INCREASE Foods that support optimal immune function: • Raw garlic, walnuts, pomegranate, apple cider vinegar, medicinal mushrooms (shitake maitake, reishi, cordyceps, turkeytail). https://www.bodhiclinic.com/ mushrooms-will-they-make-the-super-food-list/. • SPICES: Oregano, Thyme, Ginger, Tulsi (Holy Basil). • Beets, cooked greens, celery, artichoke, carrots, asparagus. • Horseradish is a bitter that is beneficial for the sinus and lungs, rich in vitamins.

Anti-inflammatory diet. One of the most virulent aspects of COVID-19 is the inflammation and cytokine storm in severe cases. An anti-inflammatory diet can reduce symptoms if contracted. Most of the foods mentioned in this section are part of an anti-inflammatory diet. Include Omega-3 rich foods like fish (wild halibut, cod, salmon), nuts (walnuts) and seeds rich in ALA.
