Integrative Cancer Care

Integrative Cancer Care for the 21st Century

Welcome to the world of integrative medicine. We look forward to walking with you on your journey. The use of complementary and alternative medicine (also known as integrative medicine) has exploded over the past decade.  So has the sophistication in research concerning the use of botanicals, homeopathy, nutrients, physical modalities, diet, lifestyle modifications and detoxification in relation to cancer.  Naturopathic doctors are trained in these areas and are a critical part of your health care team when dealing with cancer.

The Bodhi Clinic is proud to offer a specialist in naturopathic oncology: Dr. Stephany Porter, a practitioner who is dedicated to cancer care.  Dr. Porter has received additional training in Naturopathic Oncology and is a Fellow Associate of the Board of Naturopathic Oncologists. (Read more below about why board certification in oncology is important.) Dr. Porter works closely with your oncologist and health care team to assure that your treatment plan is collaborative and based upon your individual needs. The plan will vary as your conventional treatment changes.

The following questions can be answered by your naturopathic doctor:

  • Everybody seems to have a product that they feel will help, but how do I know what to take?
  • How can I improve the effect of my radiation and chemotherapy treatments yet decrease the side effects and long term toxicities?
  • Are these therapies congruent with my oncologist’s goals?
  • I have completed my conventional therapies. Is there anything else I can do?
  • Which foods will benefit me the most?
  • Conventional medicine has no options for me at this point. What else can be done?

When should you schedule a visit?

The ideal scenario is to see Dr. Porter prior to starting conventional therapies. Your treatment plan will be designed to support your body, mind and spirit through each stage by protecting organs at risk, decreasing side effects and increasing the efficacy of the conventional therapies.

Once you have completed conventional therapies, you will be guided through various treatment options to decrease the risk of recurrence and rebuild your body.

Board Certification and Continuing Education

Naturopathic doctors who meet standards representative of advanced experience and knowledge in cancer care are eligible for board certification in Naturopathic Oncology. Qualifying doctors whose applications are accepted must pass stringent examinations in order to be awarded the status of Fellow by the American Board of Naturopathic Oncology. Examinations demonstrate competence in both naturopathic and conventional medical oncology. These naturopathic physicians meet the highest standard of the profession as specialists in naturopathic oncology

The Oncology Association of Naturopathic Physicians (OncANP) is a specialty society created by naturopathic doctors who either specialize in naturopathic oncology or who desire to further their knowledge and understanding of the field. OncANP is a recognized affiliate of the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians (AANP), the national professional association of naturopathic physicians in the United States. OncANP’s founding vision is, “… to enhance survival and quality of life for people living with cancer through the integration of naturopathic oncology into cancer care.” One of the goals of the association is to bring naturopathic doctors into standard medical oncology practices. To achieve this, the organization has worked to create a credentialing process to assure a level of competence in naturopathic oncology.  Visit http://oncanp.org for more information.
